The Work Plane's hidden history

Even though the Work Plane is not enlisted in the Model Structure, it is part of the history. This article describes how to position the Work Plane in the model and in what way it is linked to objects. This is critical in order to obtain the best results when designing.

Mechanical engineers and all who use the mechanical engineering approach need to be especially aware of how the Work Plane is being positioned. Usually, they need to follow a sort of Work Plane history. Actually, the program manages this automatically, but there are some aspects that you have to be aware of in order to really have your model work in accordance with your design intent. Let's go through an example.

When you start creating a new model, the Work Plane coincides with the Absolute Reference System (World reference system).

What if you did not exactly follow this sequence?
It often happens that you don't exactly follow the intended final sequence of Work Plane placements, because you changed your mind several times (typical design process).

As an example, say you placed the Work Plane on a side face instead of the front face, and then you realized that the right one was the front face, and you eventually placed the Work Plane there. There's an extra step.

No problem. The program does not take into account the unused Work Plane placement events. They will be automatically removed from the hidden history once you Save the file.

Now, we have to underline that every time we positioned the Work Plane it was linked to "entities with history" (represented by the Lock () marker). It means that, re-evaluating the model or changing/dragging its dimensions will result in the right behavior. See below:

The slots are not positioned properly; in other words, they are not following your design intent.

Therefore, be aware of your Work Plane's "hidden" history, if you plan to modify your objects.
