Creating a Local Boolean Difference

The Solid Difference command enables you to subtract a solid from a base solid using some auxiliary surfaces. You will create the difference between the sphere and the cylinder in the following illustration.

To accomplish this task download the "LocalDiffInt.e3" file available in the Samples folder of your think3 installation.

In order to obtain the following result (shown in the image below) you have to select the Local option and indicate the outer face of the cylinder as the bounding surface:

Proceed as follows:

  1. Start the Solid Difference command and select the Local in the Boolean drop-down list.

  2. Select the first solid for the Solid A selector, as shown in the image below.

  3. Select the second solid for the Solids B selector, as shown in the image below.

To change the selected solids, right-click on the respective solid selectors in the selection list, select Reset from the context menu and perform the selection again.

  4. Select the bounding face for the Faces selector, as shown in the image below.

To change the selected faces, right-click on Faces, select Reset from the context menu and perform the selection again.

  5. Select the Preview () button to see the preview of the result. In big models this may take some time.

  6. Click or to create the difference, as shown in the image below.

    Click to discard your changes.
