Use of Refuge Holes

The refuge hole is a slot or a cut done in the plate where the standard part Nipple is inserted. The purpose of the refuge hole is to fit the nipple inside the plates. This is important for safe design of cooling system. The following illustration shows the difference in the insertion of the nipples with or without refuge holes.

When the Refuge Hole check box is not selected, the inserted nipples are half way through the plate. The part of the nipple is outside the plate, as shown in the image below:



When the Refuge Hole check box is selected, a slot is created for the Nipple to be fit into the plate. The refuge hole provides a safety housing for the nipple, as shown in the image below:



In a standard cooling system, nipples with refuge holes is considered as a good design. The Refuge Hole check box is selected by default in the Mold Cooling selection list.
