Zooming, panning and rotating and panning

Controlling and manipulating the display of objects through the mouse

The most common viewing actions:

  • zooming: increasing/decreasing the magnification of the displayed objects
  • panning: moving the displayed view
  • rotating: rotating the displayed view

can be performed dynamically using the mouse.

Dynamic Zoom
To activate the dynamic zoom facility, hold down the SHIFT key and press the right mouse button.
The cursor will change to:

The dynamic zoom facility enlarges or reduces the image according to the movements of the mouse.
Move the mouse:
  • up, to enlarge the image
  • down, to reduce the image
Release the mouse button when the objects are displayed with the magnification you like.
You can also use the mouse wheel (if any):
  • Rotate towards yourself to enlarge the image (zoom in)
  • Rotate away form yourself to reduce the image (zoom out).
Dynamic Panning
The dynamic panning facility scrolls the display window according to the movements of the cursor.
To activate the panning facility, hold down the CTRL key and press the right mouse button.
The cursor will change to:

Move the mouse to the position where you want the window to be scrolled to and then release the mouse button.
Dynamic rotation
You can rotate the model about the axes of the active view by holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse in the desired direction.
The cursor will change to:

  • Move the mouse horizontally to rotate the model about the y-axis of the view
  • Move the mouse vertically to rotate the model about the x-axis of the view.


The options which control dynamic rotation using the mouse are located in the Automatic actions area in the View-Advanced category in the System Options.
